Presentation Synopsis:

Decarbonization has become one of the main focuses worldwide as we work towards sustainability in the built environment.  Join us for a discussion on decarbonization from various perspectives as we host four speakers to review the difficulties, strategies, and guidelines that surround decarbonization in our region and climate. Each panelist will provide a 15 to 20-minute overview of their decarbonization perspective and we will follow the presentation by a question period from the audience.

About the Panelists:

Nic Besseling P.Eng., LEED AP BD+C - Principal, AME Consulting Group

As the managing Principal of AME’s Calgary Office, Nic brings in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems design over a diverse number of sectors including HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, and energy analysis. He is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Nic is a LEED Accredited Professional who is both personally and professionally committed to sustainability and stays current with leading-edge technologies and innovation in mechanical design. Nic has experience in net zero carbon mechanical design and has a great knowledge of low carbon system types and applications.




Anica Landreneau AIA, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP - Director of Sustainable Design, HOK

Anica is HOK’s global sustainable design director, serving on the firm’s board of directors and design board.

Based in Washington, D.C., Anica is a mayoral appointee to the District of Columbia’s Green Building Advisory Council and co-chairs the Building Energy Performance Standard Task Force. Anica is serving a third term on the Green and Energy Codes Committee, supporting the district’s decarbonization code development and advancement to a zero-carbon code by 2026.

Nationally, Anica is a senior fellow of the New Buildings Institute; serves on the USGBC LEED Advisory Committee and AIA Government Advocacy Committee; is a former chair of the AIA Codes and Standards Committee; and co-authored with the AIA Blue Ribbon Panel on Codes “Disruption, Evolution, and Change: AIA’s Vision for the Future of Design and Construction.”

Her testimony before Congress and recommendations for building policies and incentives are included in the House Select Committee report “Solving the Climate Crisis: The Congressional Action Plan for a Clean Energy Economy and a Healthy, Resilient, and Just America” as well as the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act of 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.


Thomas H. Phoenix, P.E., FASHRAE, BEMP, LEED AP

Thomas Phoenix is currently a Business Development Engineering with Mechanical Contractors, L.L.C. Previously, he was a Principal with CPL Architects & Engineers. He has a B.S. degree in engineering from NC State University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina and six other States and has over 35 years of experience in the design, operation and maintenance of building mechanical and energy systems in commercial, educational, government, and medical office facilities.

Mr. Phoenix has been an active member of ASHRAE since 1982, and was elevated to the grade of Fellow in 2011. He is an ASHRAE Presidential Member, having served as Society President in 2014-15. He served on ASHRAE’s Board of Directors for 11 years and has chaired the Publishing and Education Council and numerous ASHRAE committees. Mr. Phoenix is an ASHRAE Certified Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) and is also an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. He is an ASHRAE Foundation Trustee and was Co-chair of ASHRAE’s Task Force for Building Decarbonization in 2021-22.

Mr. Phoenix also serves as Vice Chair of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS). He previously served for six years as Chair of the Advanced Energy Design Guides Steering Committee, which is composed of representatives from ASHRAE, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES), and the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

Mr. Phoenix is active in his local community. He is a graduate of Leadership Greensboro, a member of the Leadership Greensboro Alumni Association and a past member of the Board of Trustees for the Greensboro Children’s Museum. He is a Charter Member and Past President of the Gate City Rotary Cluib. He served as a Committee Chairman for 19 years with the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic, and event benefitting the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

He is married to the former Rebecca Champion, and he and Becky have two children.

Justin Pockar - Manager, Customer Solutions and Business Registries at City of Calgary

Prior to joining The City of Calgary Justin worked as a consultant, completing several projects certified to LEED Gold or better. As Manager of Customer Advisory Services at the City of Calgary, current responsibilities include intake and inquiries for permitting and business license. Formerly, roles included coordinator of Energy and Environment and Coordinator of plans examination. He has authored several works, notably playing a role in the development of the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) and contributing volumes for both ASHRAE and BIM Canada publications. In addition, he occupies positions on the Canada Green Building Council Alberta Board of Directors, the Standing Committee for Energy Efficiency at the National Research Council, and SAIT’s Green Building Technology Centre Board.
