Sustainable Communities Update - September 2021

We’ve made progress! Even amidst the ongoing concerns and precautions taking place around COVID-19, we were able to get on site and review the needs of Hull Services.

Hull Services is a local non-profit that has a long history of providing leading edge child, youth, and family mental health services to Calgarians for more than 56 years. Hull works with children, youth, and families who have experienced significant challenges. They offer them an opportunity to seek well-being and happiness, with a focus on mental health.

Members of the Southern Alberta Chapter are currently collaborating and proposing an HVAC replacement, to upgrade the aging system on the eldest building on the Hull Services Campus, the “Canteen” as it was referred to back in the early 60’s. The Canteen is comprised of the kitchen, west wing and the social room at Hull.

Problems include a non-function HVAC system, that has been since been supplemented with various temporary heating sources in the winter months. Overall poor ventilation for their Social Room, which previously was utilized as a rental space, to generate revenue but has been under-utilized in recent years because of the limited ventilation.

The chapter is reviewing and is proposing a handful of solutions to assist Hull Services, which include a complete site assessment, to further advise the organization of their current and future needs, the installation of a new air handling unit which would include new duct work, venting and filtration. Overall the project will include HVAC installation, electrical and duct cleaning, testing, balancing and commissioning.

We already have some preliminary assistance from equipment vendors but we’re still in need of contractors that could support the installation and/or site assessment at Hull. Please feel free to contact me or reach out to the SAC ASHRAE board, if you or others you know might be willing to assist.
